Rising Sun 6, South Ripley 1; 1A Sectional 46 Title

Boys Varsity Soccer, 1A Sectional 46 at Jac-Cen-Del- Saturday, October 6

Rising Sun 6, South Ripley 1 (RS led 4-1 at half)

Rising Sun asst. coach Mark Boetticher- “The last time Rising Sun’s boys soccer team won sectionals was 2000.  I was a 6-year-old boy who was in 1st grade trying to learn letters and numbers.  Our head coach Robert Kelnhofer was 32, in good shape and taught at Mount Saint Joseph.  For the rest of the current team, none of them were even born yet. It took 18 years with 18 more tries to finally bring the trophy back home.”

“In the first half, we out shot South Ripley 15-3 (10-2 on goal). However at the beginning, the Raiders outhustled us and got to the ball most of the time. They did not make things easy for us.”

“Jake Bovard scored our first two goals.  The first came at 28:06 on an assist by Brayden Bush.  The second followed at 13:24 with an assist from Landon Cole.”

“The pressure was still coming against our defense but we scored two more times within the final 10 mintues of the half.  James Bounds scored at 7:55, assisted by Kendall Montgomery the Zac Brokaw had an unassistaed goal at 6:32.  South Ripley got its only goal of the night with 3:15 to go before the break.”

“In the second half, we out shot the Raiders 17-6 (10-2 on goal). Brokaw showed he wasn’t even rusty after being out three weeks with an injury. He scored two more goals in the second half to end the game with a hat trick.  Just over a minute into the second half (38:46) he again scored unassisted.  The hat trick goal came on a penalty kick with 8:27 to play.  Jordan Parsons had three saves for the Shiners.”

“Credit to South Ripley for coming out and playing hard. I know how it feels to lose in the sectional championship. Both Coach K and I agree the Raiders have improved a lot in the past 3 weeks.”

“Now Rising Sun returns to the regional tournament at Providence.  The last time we played in regionals was at Floyd Central and lost to Providence 5-0.”

Providence will face Vincennes Rivet at 10 am.  Rising Sun will meet South Spencer at 12 pm.  We hope you can go support the Shiners in person.  But if you can’t you’ll be able to watch the Rising Sun match on SEI Local Sports (via Livestream, our website or our Facebook page) beginning at 11:40 am.  Should Rising Sun win, we will also have the championship webcast at 5:40 pm.

We thank coach Boetticher for the match report.
