Greensburg 6, Franklin County 5- 2A Sectional 28 Round 1

Boys Varsity Soccer, 2A Sectional 28 at Lawrenceburg- Monday, October 1

Round 1- Greensburg 6, Franklin County 5 (GB led 3-2 at the half)

Greensburg’s Cody DeVolld- “Greensburg traveled to Lawrenceburg to take on Franklin County for its first game of the sectional tournament. In what proved to be an offensive shootout, Greensburg defeated Franklin County, 6-5, securing Greensburg’s first sectional tournament game win since 2012.”

“This was the third time Franklin County and Greensburg played this season and the game did not disappoint. Senior Vincent Pavy started the scoring for the Pirates off an assist from Nicholas Zapfe. It wasn’t too long before Franklin County found the back of the net to even it up at 1-1. Greensburg and Franklin County traded goals again before the half. Nicholas Zapfe put one in of his own off of a free kick, and Pavy scored his second of the game (assisted by Joseph Pacilio) before halftime to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Pirates.”

“The second half scoring for the Pirates saw goals from sophomore Garrett Schreiner, senior Joseph Pacilio and freshmen Luck Hellmich. It was the first goal of the season for all three as the Pirates needed all three in order to finish on top. Franklin County scored two goals in the game’s final 15 minutes to keep the pressure on the Pirates and bring the score to 6-5. The Pirates held on though in large part to senior goalkeeper Mason Ponsler who finished the game with 11 saves.”

Franklin County’s Dan Gartenman- “The Wildcats gave their all. They left everything on the field.  Unfortunately, that just was not enough against a high scoring Greensburg team, falling 6-5.”

“Greensburg opened the scoring and Franklin County answered back. They traded goals for the first half and the beginning of the second. Greensburg then poured on 3 goals in a hurry before FC answered with two of their own. Unfortunately, this group of hard working, resilient young men could not find the tying goal in the last fifteen minutes. Scoring for Franklin County were Cledith Martin (twice), Reese Catron, Cole Rapp and Grant Suding.”

“This ends their season with a record of 5-11-1 and a conference record of 2-5. No matter the results, they have made their school, community and coaches proud. Their future is very bright!”

We thank coaches DeVolld and Gartneman for the match reports.
