(SOC/B-Sun) Rebels are first time champs with 1-0 win over Shiners

Vevay-  Southwestern and Rising Sun tied at Rising Sun in September and the Rebels beat the Shiners in Hanover a week ago to force a second place tie between the two teams in the ORVC.  So what happened during their third meeting on Saturday at Switzerland County?

Southwestern won a 1-0 grinder for the program’s first-ever Sectional 58 title.

The only goal of the night came at 35:04 of the second half.  Edi Tovar sent a lead pass to Coleman Jackson.  The team’s top scorer negotiated positioning through the Shiner defense and sent a ball to the far side of the net.

The Rebels packed it defensively after that as the Shiners were trying to apply more pressure on offense.

Rising Sun had some close calls.  Three shots (one of them a header) hit the cross bar.  The Shiners also questioned one of their shots on goal they contended was held on the inside of the goal line.  The officials said it was not.

For the game, Southwestern outshot Rising Sun 21-18 including 14-9 on goal.

Coach Mike Seipel’s Rising Sun Shiners end their season at 10-6-2, its first winning season since 2007.  For the first time in school history, the program was ranked in the ISCA Class 1A Soccer Poll.

Meanwhile, coach Dave Bramer and Southwestern will visit uncharted waters but in familiar territory.  Contradiction?  No.  The Rebels are making their first trip to a regional but will do so on the same pitch where they won the sectional- at Switzerland County.

The Rebels (12-3-3) will take on Trinity Lutheran (record not yet reported) on Thursday at 5 pm.  At Salem, the Cougars beat Henryville 8-0 then ousted the host Lions 6-1 in the sectional final.

The season has also been extended for another ORVC team.  Jac-Cen-Del (ranked 15th, record 13-2-3) will play Providence (11-6-2) at 7 pm.
