Centerville- The Batesville boys soccer team traveled to Centerville to take on Heritage Christian for the first round of regional action Thursday. Batesville battled back to tie the defensive struggle late in regulation but eventually lost to the underdog Eagles 2-1 in overtime.
Batesville started off strong with more possession and several shots early but were unable to get a quality shot on goal. The game was scoreless through the first half.
The second half found the Bulldogs struggling to get many shots on goal but continued to put the Eagles keeper and defense under pressure. But in the mix with 10 minutes left, HC’s Willie Nguyen broke the scoreless tie to gain a 1-0 lead.
As time was winding down and the rain falling, the Bulldogs continued to attack. Ian Prickel scored a dramatic goal to get the Bulldogs back in the match as he finished a Ben Locker corner kick with less than two minutes remaining.
The final minutes involved a furious attack by Batesville but the Dogs were unable to get the game winning goal.
With about three minutes to go in the first of two seven-minute overtime halves, Heritage Christian went up 2-1 on a Kevin Yang goal. Despite continuing to work hard and outshooting the Eagles 17-8, the Bulldogs were unable to get the equalizer before time expired in the second overtime half.
