Versailles- The Shawe Memorial Hilltoppers survived two scrappy affairs on Thursday en route to a seventh and eighth grade victory at South Ripley. In the seventh grade contest, Shawe held off a near 16-point comeback by the Raiders to win 20-19. The game was a truly a tale of two halves.
The Hilltoppers led after one quarter 5-2 and then erupted in the second quarter for an 11-2 run. Heading into halfime, Shawe led the Raiders 16-4. The Hilltoppers got great inside play in the first two quarters while South Ripley dealt with both turnovers and poor shooting.
0Then in the second half the tables turned. The Hilltoppers were battling turnovers and ice cold shooting while SR began to take over. Down by 16, the Raiders were able to cut the deficit down to 10, trailing 18-8 at the end of three.
As the fourth quarter started, Ripley used the entire six minutes to keep edging closer and closer. Getting a steal with 13 seconds left and down by one, the Raiders had the last shot of the game. It went in and out at the buzzer. A huge sigh of relief came from the Shawe sidelines and the Hilltoppers escaped with a 20-19 victory.
