Southwestern 53, Switzerland Co. 44; 2A Sectional 45 Title

Hanover- For the first time since 1998, Southwestern is a boys basketball sectional champion.  The 20-year drought ended Saturday in the King Gymnasium as the host Rebels defeated Switzerland County 53-44.

This game was seen live as part of our Highpoint Health Basketball Webcast Schedule.  See it again archived in 720p HD by clicking here.

The victory for coach Jerry Bomholt and Southwestern was the 24th of the season, a program single-season record.  But it didn’t come easily.

Coach Adam Dennis and his Pacers were riding high after Austin South’s 70-foot shot at the buzzer in overtime to knock off North Decatur 62-60.  The Vevay boys came out with great intensity taking an early 8-4 lead and holding a 12-10 advantage after eight minutes.

As was the case in the two sectional games prior, Southwestern got its mojo going in the second quarter.  Trailing 18-13, the Rebels outscored the Pacers 11-2 to grab a 24-20 edge at intermission.  Tyler Kramer did most of the scoring damage for the hosts with 17 points.  South had nine for the visitors.

The Rebels continued to roll in the third, stretching the favorable point spread from four to 14 points before  the Pacers scored the final bucket of the stanza to make it 40-28 with a quarter to go.

That was the beginning of an impressive run for Switz who fought back to get within one, 43-42.  But the dream season for Southwestern was simply not going to be derailed on its home hardwood.  The Rebs outscored the Swiss 10-2 the rest of the way and won 53-44.

Tyler Kramer picked up another 12 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 29 and was named our Whitewater Motor Company Player Of The Game.  He was also named Sectional 45 MVP.  A complete list is published in another story.

Others scoring in double figures for the Rebels were Coleman Jones with 12 and Foster Mefford with 10. Austin South led the Pacers with 17 points and Kyle Whitham added 12.

Story continues.
