Southwestern 69, South Decatur 46; 2A Sectional 45 Semifinal

Hanover- Two hurdles down and one to go in Class 2A Sectional 45.  Tournament favorite Southwestern followed up its 16-point, first round win over South Ripley Tuesday, with a 23-point victory over South Decatur Friday. The sectional semifinal result was 69-46 Rebels.

Once again, coach Jerry Bomholt’s boys from Hanover turned over their opponent with regularity and reaped the benefits of their heists.  Southwestern forced 22 South Decatur miscues, 15 coming on outright steals, which directly resulted in 33 points.

Coach Kendall Wildey’s Cougars were missing their top player, Matt Cornett, who fractured both wrists following a dunk during South Decatur’s Senior Night.  But it’s hard to fathom that even with the 6’5” senior’s 22.5 points and 14 rebounds per game in the lineup, the end result would have been much different.  The Rebels’ defense is just that good.

Just like Tuesday, Southwestern started slowly leading only 9-7 after the first quarter.  South Decatur tied the game for the only time on a Lane Lauderbaugh deuce to start the second period.  By the way, Lauderbaugh can play and he’s only a freshman.

But, again, just like Tuesday, the Rebels hit their stride in the second and scored 17 of the next 21 points to go up 13.  The tournament hosts eventually led by that same margin at halftime, 30-17.

Southwestern’s Tyler Kramer did what Tyler Kramer does.  He scores.  The junior had 15 points in the first half.  Meanwhile, Lauderbaugh carried his Cougars through the first 16 minutes by posting 14 of the team’s 17 points.

The Westport squad briefly drew within nine early in the third quarter but eventually fell behind 49-32 by the end of the stanza.  The Rebels lead peaked at 27 in the fourth before falling back to 23 at the final horn, 69-46.

Speaking of 23, it was the 23rd win this season for Southwestern which ties a school record.
