Hauser 69, Rising Sun 51; 1A Sectional 60 Round 1

Shelby County, IN- For three quarters Wednesday, Rising Sun had Hauser, the ninth ranked team in Class 1A basketball, on the ropes.  At Sectional 60, hosted by Southwestern Shelbyville, the Jets led by only three.  But a senior-heavy club from Hope outscored the Ohio County crew 25-10 in the final quarter to win by a deceptively broad margin of 69-51.

At the start, the substantially favored Jets raced out to a 10-0 lead.  But coach Chris Jones’ Shiners rallied with a 13-2 run to go up one.  Hauser got the last bucket of the period to hold a 14-13 advantage after one quarter.

The Jets’ 6-9 senior center, Alex Gross, looked unstoppable inside scoring eight points in the period.  Nick Koons and Noah Pflum, both Shiner junior guards, had four and three points respectively.

The two lead changes near the end of the first eight minutes were just the beginning as the two clubs trade spots on the high side of the scoreboard five more times in the second stanza. Rising Sun made the last run of eight points to log a 31-26 lead at the half.

Rising Sun’s defense really picked up intensity after spotting its adversary 10 points to start, helping to produce 14 Hauser turnovers. If it were not for the Jets’ dominance on the boards (16-7 at halftime), their deficit might have been even greater.

Koons scored six points in the period for the Blue and White while classmate Jacob Bovard followed with five.  As Gross was held in check, fellow Jets’ seniors Sam Meek and Justin Compton picked up the scoring slack.  Meek had five points. Compton scored four.

Rising Sun continued to lead through much of the third quarter until there were three more lead changes in quick fashion.  The final occurred on consecutive 3-point plays by Gross and teammate Mason Sherman.  For Sherman, it was part of a seven-point period. Gross and Compton both added five.  Koons put in four for the Sun.
