Southwestern 69, South Ripley 53; 2A Sectional 45 Round 1

Hanover- If you’ve watched Southwestern Hanover with any regularity this season, you know you just have to wait for it.  That would be a defensive onslaught which produces a big run, or two or three.  The Class 2A Sectional 45 hosts had two such runs against South Ripley and defeated the Raiders in the first-round game, 69-53.

This game was seen live as part of our Highpoint Health Basketball Webcast Schedule.  See it again archived in 720p HD by clicking here.

Coach Travis Wrightsman’s Raiders trailed 15-12 at the end of the first quarter and took a brief 16-15 lead early in the second.  The Rebels, up 19-18, turned the tight tussle into a one-horse race.  Southwestern scored 17 of the next 20 points to surge ahead 36-21 at the half.

South Ripley attempted a comeback by posting the first five points of the third quarter.  However, coach Jerry Bomholt’s boys from Hanover cranked things up one more time and strung together 15 straight points to put the game away.  By the end of the period, it was 55-33 Southwestern.

A rather uneventful fourth quarter saw more of a give and take between the two ORVC opponents.  The 10th-ranked Rebels went on to claim a 69-53 victory, their 22nd of the season and their first sectional win since 2009.

Collectively, Southwestern did it with defense, good passing and solid shooting.  The Rebels forced 17 turnovers which led directly to 20 points.  Team Hanover also took care of the ball and only had three turnovers of their own.  The home troops shot 52 percent from the floor and 76 percent at the line.

Individually, Southwestern’s Tyler Kramer was an easy choice for our Whitewater Motor Company Player Of The Game.  The junior, who scored his 1000th point earlier this season, had a 30-point night on 9 of 15 shooting from the floor and an 8 for 8 effort at the line.

Also for the Rebels, Matthew Williams put in 18 points and connected on 8 of 12 shots.  Hunter Mefford tallied 10 points and a team-best seven steals.  Coleman Jones headed the team in rebounds with nine and also had nine points to match.  Foster Mefford, the conference leader in assists this season, had seven dishes and chipped in two points.
