Greensburg 51, East Central 43; Spartans win EIAC outright

St. Leon- While East Central’s boys basketball program celebrated Senior Night and its 2008 sectional title team Friday, there was no co-EIAC championship to go along with it.  Greensburg defeated East Central 51-43 to lock both clubs into second place at 5-2 behind undisputed champion, 6-1 Connersville.

So as the 2017-18 regular season has come to an end, Connersville won its fourth straight EIAC title, solo or shared.  Greensburg finished its ninth straight year placing no lower than second in the conference. The Pirates have won five championships since 2010 with the last coming in 2015 (shared with the Spartans).  For East Central, 2018’s second place finish in the division is the highest since the Trojans last won it in 2011.

Friday was an uphill battle from the get go for coach David Disbro’s Trojans as their leading scorer and floor leader Tyler Koelling (21.0 ppg) remained on the bench after just having season ending knee surgery.

The Trojans did enjoy an early 5-0 lead but were tied with the Pirates, 9-9, at the end of the first quarter.  EC’s last lead was 12-11 in the second period.  By halftime, Greensburg was up 24-19.

Through 16 minutes, Greensburg’s Drew Comer hit three triples for nine points.  East Central’s Jared Volpenhein scored seven and was 3 of 3 from the stripe.

Coach Stacy Meyer and the Pirates’ advantage reached nine points twice in the third quarter, including 35-26 at quarter’s end.

An early burst in the fourth by East Central drew the Trojans to within four, 35-31, but Greensburg soon pushed margin up to 10 and eventually won by eight, 51-43.
