Connersville 50, East Central 36; JV Spartans 36-26

St. Leon- The three time defending EIAC champs became conference leaders again as Connersville defeated East Central 50-36 in St. Leon Thursday.  The Spartan defense forced 17 Trojan turnovers.  CHS converted many of the miscues into points and improved to 4-1 in the EIAC.  The Trojans fall back to second place at 3-1.

Both teams found success from long range in the first quarter.  Two triples by the Trojans’ Tyler Koelling and one by Alex Maxwell helped give EC an 11-7 advantage.  However, Dalton Lee’s second bomb of the period started a 7-0 run to put CHS ahead 14-11 at the stop.

The scoring slowed in the second stanza.  Six of seven Connersville points came on trifectas from Clay Garrison and Garrett Silcott.  East Central’s Jared Volpenhein made the team’s only field goal of the frame to go along with three Trojan free throws.  It was 21-16 Spartans at the half.

Connersville’s defensive pressure started to really convert East Central turnovers into points during the third.  The Spartans scored a quick six points to begin the period. Koelling’s 3-ball provided the hosts only interruption of what was a 14-3 run by visitors who upped their lead to 16 points, 35-19.  Silcott and Wes Smith both had four points in the flurry for the folks from Fayette County.

Coach Dave Disbro’s Trojans did fight back.  By the end of the third, their deficit was 11, 35-24, as Luke Collinsworth made the final five points of the period.

In the fourth, East Central pulled to within six, 42-36. But from that point forward, coach Kerry Brown’s Connersville crew cranked up the defensive intensity again and turned over the Trojans for the final eight points of the game as the Spartans won 50-36.

SEI Local Sports congratulates Connersville’s Garrett Silcott who was named our Whitewater Motor Company Player Of The Game.  Silcott had a co-game high 17 points.
