South Dearborn 6, Rising Sun 5

The following is an unedited baseball webcast report from Steve Giesting.  We thank him for the report.

The South Dearborn Knights came from behind twice on Wednesday to defeat the Rising Sun Shiners 6 – 5.  The game was delayed by lightning for an hour in the bottom of the first.

The game was a pitcher’s duel through the first 3 innings.  After giving up a leadoff single in the top of the first, South Dearborn’s Derek Williams set down the next 9 Shiners in a row.  Meanwhile, Rising Sun’s Brent Turner was keeping the Knights in check.

South Dearborn had a big scoring chance in the bottom of the 3rd.  Kane Curry singled to open the inning for SD.  One out later, Tobie Teke and Ethan Getz walked to load the bases with only 1 out.  Turner buckled down and refused to give in or give up a run.  He got a taper in front of home plate that he fielded himself and beat the Knight runner home for the force out and then got a strikeout looking to end the inning.

Rising Sun broke through in the top of the 4th inning.  Jake Bovard reached on an error to lead off the inning and raced all the way around to score when Turner tripled.  Turner would later score on a fielder’s choice by Landon Cole to make it 2 – 0 in favor of Rising Sun.

South Dearborn got on the board in the bottom of the 5th.  Tyler Morehead walked to open the inning.  Teke tried to sacrifice him into scoring position but Turner pounced quickly on the bunt and fired to 2nd to get the force out on the lead runner.  Getz was up next and he doubled to the gap in left center as Teke raced around to score from first and cut the Knight’s deficit in half at 2 – 1.

The score would remain 2 – 1 until the 7th inning.  In the top of the inning, Rising Sun threatened when Colby Ritter was hit by a pitch and Caleb Valentine singled.  The Knights brought in Brady Fentress to try to put out the fire and keep it a 1 run game.  He was able to do just that as he got a strikeout looking and then picked Valentine off of first base to end the inning.
