South Ripley 7, Greensburg 3; JV Raiders 15-9

The following is an unedited report from SEI Local Sports’ Steve Giesting:

After being rained out in their scheduled opener on Monday, the South Ripley Raiders started their season on Friday with a 7 – 3 road win at Greensburg.  Freshman Brady Linkel started and earned the win for the Raiders, allowing 3 runs in 3+ innings of work.

South Ripley got the offense going early against Greensburg freshman Blane Redd.  The Raiders loaded the bases with no outs on a hit batter, a Pirate error and a walk.  Redd was able to limit the damage to a single run.  Bryer Franklin plated Luke Welch with a fielder’s choice ground out.

The Raiders plated 3 more runs in the top of the 2nd.  Zach Pickett walked to lead off the inning.  After a flyout, Cody Samples worked a walk.  Jackson Cornett then reached on an infield single to load the bases for the Raiders.  All 3 would score on wild pitches as South Ripley went up 4  – 0.

Greensburg would threaten in the bottom of the inning.  David Blankman walked to open the inning.  Tucker Bailey reached on an error and advanced to 2nd as Blankman went to 3rd on the play.  After a strikeout, Dakota Wesseler walked to load the bases with only 1 out.  Linkel never wavered, getting back to back strikeouts to end the inning and keep the Pirates off the board.

Greensburg would score for the first time in the game in the bottom of the 4th.  Blankman and Bailey walked to lead of the inning.  Blankman tried to advance when a ball got away from Raiders catcher Chad Turner.  Turner would recover quickly and fire a strike to 3rd base to catch Blankman and get the Raiders a much needed first out.

Aaron Moeller singled to put 2 runners on for Greensburg.  Bailey would score the first run for Greensburg when he scored on a wild pitch.  Back to back to back walks would load the bases for Greensburg and bring about a pitching change for the Raiders as Avery Halcomb came in to pitch.  The first batter he would face was Chase Springmeyer.  He reached on an infield single to plate the Pirates 3rd run of the inning.  Halcomb then got a fielder’s choice ground out to end the inning and preserve the Raiders lead at 4 – 3.

Toby Brogan came on in relief for Greensburg in the fourth inning.  He kept South Ripley off the scoreboard until the top of the 7th inning.  Bryer Franklin led off the inning and reached on a Pirate error.  After an infield pop out for the first out of the inning, Zach Pickett reached on another Pirate error.  Bryce Franklin followed with an rbi single before Cody Samples walked to load the bases.
