Jasper- The result of the first game of the Jasper 3A Baseball Regional Saturday sent the state’s tweeters and texters into a frenzy as a good but unranked Silver Creek team knocked off Jasper 4-1 on its home field. The Wildcats were the 3A division’s number one ranked team.
Dragons’ pitcher Lucas Barnett held Jasper to just three hits while his team pounded out 11 in the upset. Silver Creek broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with three runs that included a crushing, two-run homer by Jamie Valvano.
Reports out of Jasper indicated that it was Valvano’s first home run…ever.
Greensburg, as expected, defeated a five-win Evansville Memorial team, 2-0 in game two. Pirates’ pitcher Kevin Meyer was the story as he tossed a two-hitter.
That kind of effort by Meyer was needed as the Pirates offense didn’t exactly tear the cover off the ball. Tyler Burcham doubled in the first inning then scored on an Austin Schultz base hit.
Greensburg’s only other run came in the fourth when Ethan Bailey hit a solo home run.
In the finals against Silver Creek, the third-ranked Pirates were not going to be the second team slayed by the Dragons.
