Versailles- North Decatur overcame numerous errors and got some late clutch hitting to defeat Southwestern (Hanover) in Wednesday’s opening round Class 2A Sectional 45 game at South Ripley.
The Rebels (visiting team in the bracket) scored first with a pair of runs. Tristan Embs walked and Caleb Rogers boarded on an infield error. Michael Humphrey smacked a double of the fence to score both runners.
Southwestern made it 3-0 in the third as Brad Sims singled to drive in Embs.
North Decatur got on the board in the home third. Mitch Knecht singled and Christian McKinney walked. Seth Gauck hit into a force play but hustled to get to second. Kevin Geis singled up the middle to score two runs to cut the Rebel lead to 3-2.
The Hanover boys added a run in the fifth without the benefit of a hit. Corey O’Neal walked and scored on three consecutive Charger errors to make it 4-2.
ND took its first lead in the home fifth with a three-run stanza. Dustin Westerfeld walked, Jason Kirchhoff singled and Austin Brown put down a sacrifice bunt. However, there was no out on the play. The throwing attempt to get Westerfeld at third sailed high allowed Westerfeld to score. A ground out by Knecht plated Kirchhoff and, one out later, an RBI hit by Gauck got Brown home. It was now 5-4 Chargers.
