Athletes of the Week for September 18-23

SEI Local Sports would like to thank our area coaches and athletic directors who took the time to honor one or more of their varsity, junior varsity and freshman athletes as an Athlete of the Week (AOW). This edition is for the period of September 18-23, 2017. Every athlete submitted is worthy of this honor and we are proud to showcase all of them!

In addition, a committee has selected a group of varsity level AOWs as Elite Athletes of the Week.  This special list includes one varsity athlete per sport per conference (EIAC and ORVC/Oldenburg).  While some sports are not conference sports in the ORVC, ORVC/Oldenburg athletes participating in such sports are eligible for Elite AOW under the ORVC umbrella.

ELITE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Congratulations to this group of outstanding athletes selected by committee as our Elite Athletes of the Week for August 21-26, 2017.

EIAC BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY ELITE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Athlete’s name: Joshua Myers, Batesville

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Boys Cross Country
  • Athlete’s year/position: Sophomore
  • Submitted by: Lisa Gausman
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: I would like recognize Joshua this week, not on his performance, but rather on his character. Our middle school hosted a meet last Thursday.  One of the opposing teams had an autistic runner and the head coach who usually helps him could not be at the meet.  So the assistant coach was worried about how he would do. Joshua stepped right up and was willing to run with him. He encouraged him and was with him the whole race. It was neat to witness and I was definitely a proud coach.

EIAC GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY ELITE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Athlete’s name: Emma Gausman, Batesville

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Girls Cross Country
  • Athlete’s year/position: Senior
  • Submitted by: Lisa Gausman
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Emma has been struggling a little bit in her last couple of races. But at the EIAC, she looked like her normal self, stepping up and finishing 7th and making All-Conference.

ORVC/OA BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY ELITE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

There was no full-time varsity athlete submitted in this category.

ORVC/OA GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY ELITE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Athlete’s name: Shi Bellingham, Jac-Cen-Del

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Girls Cross Country

  • Submitted by: David Bradshaw
  • Submitter’s position: Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Shi broke her own school record for the girls’ 5000 meters with a time of 20:31 in a dual meet with Milan.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Her dedication and hard work has propelled Shi as a student-athlete. Continue with your progress!

EIAC FOOTBALL ELITE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Athlete’s name: Mitchell Orschell, Franklin County

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Football
  • Athlete’s year/position: Senior Running back
  • Submitted by: Kirk Kennedy
  • Submitter’s position: Head Football Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: In a come from behind homecoming victory last Friday over Greensburg, Mitchell carried the ball 25 times for an incredible 431 yards and scored 6 TDs.  His 431 yards rushing set a new Franklin County single-game rushing record.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: On the season (6 games), Mitchell has carried the ball 138 times for 1569 yards and has scored 24 TDs. He is averaging 11.4 yards/carry and 261.5 yards/game.  None of this would be possible without the hard work and execution of our offensive line.

ORVC/OA FOOTBALL ELITE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Athlete’s name: Cole Steele, Milan

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Football
  • Athlete’s year/position: Freshman
  • Submitted by: Ryan Langferman

ORVC/OA GIRLS’ GOLF ELITE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Athlete’s name: Riley King, Switzerland County

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Girls Golf
  • Athlete’s year/position: Senior
  • Submitted by: Natalie Wheeler
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Riley participated in the IHSAA Girls Golf Regional at The Legends in Franklin, IN. We believe she is the first girl in school history to qualify for regionals. She shot 125.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: It was a hot and long day with a slow pace of play. We are so proud of Riley for accomplishing her two goals this season: making All-Conference and qualifying for regionals. Not only did she make the All-Conference Team (6 players), but she came in first place. Riley has only played golf for three years and it has been an absolute pleasure coaching her.

EIAC BOYS’ SOCCER ELITE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

  • Athlete’s year/position: Senior Forward
  • Submitted by: Bradley Black
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Dillon scored 3 goals against Greensburg in only 25 minutes. He also was asked to play keeper in a 0-0 game at half against Batesville, securing the shutout and a 1-0 win for the conference championship.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Dillon has primarily been a defender at EC, but he has accepted a new role as a striker during his senior season. He also did a tremendous job stepping in for our injured keepers. All 4 varsity keepers were either injured or could not play.

EIAC GIRLS’ SOCCER ELITE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Athlete’s name: Britney Beil, South Dearborn

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Girls Soccer
  • Athlete’s year/position: Senior Fullback
  • Submitted by: Bob Matola
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Britney Beil moved from an outside mid to a defensive mid this season and has been a rock on our defensive line.  She  helped our team beat Oldenburg and log our ninth shutout of the season.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: A great fullback doesn’t get all the pretty stats, only pretty bruises. No matter whether Beil is sick, bruised or in pain, she never complains and is always ready to take the field. I wish there was a stat to show everyone how much she means to the team.
  • Other information: Beil now knows what an aloe plant is good for and won’t be riding a motorcycle again anytime soon.

ORVC/OA BOYS’ SOCCER ELITE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Athlete’s name: Chris Hautman, Oldenburg Academy

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Boys Soccer
  • Athlete’s year/position: Freshman Keeper
  • Submitted by: Kenny Getz
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Chris only gave up one goal in the two games played last week. Against #10 Seton Catholic and Connersville, both teams only had two loses coming in to our game. The only goal given up looked to be a hand ball in the box.

ORVC/OA GIRLS’ SOCCER ELITE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

  • Other information: Calleigh went to Nationals in BPA. She is very involved with her church and leads our team in pregame prayers. What a kid.

  • Submitter’s personal comments: Kyle has the ability to adapt his game to whatever situation he finds himself in. Over the weekend, he was fighting illness and just gutted out a couple of wins.
  • Other information: Kyle plans to attend Ball State and major in broadcasting.

ORVC/OA BOYS’ TENNIS ELITE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Athlete’s name: Coleman Jones, Southwestern
